GEORGE TOWN, Dec 30 – Penang City Council (MBPP) member Chris Lee Chun Kit has suggested that traffic lights be installed at the intersection of Jalan Batu Ferringhi and Persiaran Tanjung Bungah outside the Tanjung Bungah Floating Mosque to avoid traffic accidents.
Lee said there had been 10 reported cases of accidents on this road since June 2013, including the recent tragic motorcycle accident that occurred last Dec 17. He said other than the narrow and winding road of Jalan Batu Ferringhi, the major cause for most of these accidents was the speeding drivers.
“The idea of implementing traffic lights here was to control the speed of the vehicles to reduce traffic accidents to a minimum. This issue had been notified to the Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) which would be taking initiatives on the matter,” he told reporters here, Tuesday.
Meanwhile Masjid Terapung Tanjung Bungah Parish Deputy Chairman Ahmad Fadzil Shamsuddin also proposed implementing six items along the road for safety precautions including traffic signs such as No U-turns, speed limits, and accident warnings, as well as traffic lights, speed bumps and yellow crossing lines for pedestrians.
