KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 – The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will be focusing mainly on combating crime and threats from social media this year. Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the misuse of social media was increasingly going over the limit and seen as having the potential of disturbing public order, besides causing religious tension.

“From the studies done by international bodies, it is found that there are more than 14 million Facebookers in Malaysia alone and we are considered among the worst in terms of making comments on Facebook and Twitter. This shows that our people are immature in using the social media,” said Khalid.

“So, to overcome this problem, the Police Cyber Investigation Response Centre and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will be monitoring and detecting those committing such offences,” he told the reporters after attending the monthly assembly of all departments under the federal police headquarters, at Complex 3, Special Branch, here, Tuesday.

He said PDRM would also be focusing on enhancing service delivery towards modern policing and boosting integrity and standards compliance within the PDRM community. Last year, he said, PDRM managed to solve 56,824 or 49.2 per cent of the crime cases, including serious crime and property crime, compared with 64,417 cases or 50.1 per cent in 2014.

He said that the success rate was down a bit from the previous year’s, so we will look at the reasons and improve for 2016 and beyond. Khalid also noted that 862 individuals were arrested last year for various offences under the Prevention of Crime Act (POCA) 1959.

In August last year, the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department busted the Macau Scam syndicate with the arrest of 29 men and women from China and Taiwan, as well as the African Scam syndicate with the arrest of 35 individuals in several raids conducted. According to Khalid, with these arrests, police managed to solve 29 cases reported involving losses amounting to RM26 million.
