SIBU, Jan 29 – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will launch the standard operating procedure (SOP) manual on the management of security control operations for the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) this Saturday. The launch will be held during the 44th Rela Day celebration at the national level at Dataran Bandar Sibu Fasa 2, said Rela Director-General Datuk Kamariah Moh Noah at a media conference, here Thursday.
She said that this is something new for us so that for any safety control duty, Rela will determine the number of personnel on duty, not the department or company applying for the duty. According to Kamariah, Rela could not compromise on matters concerning safety and must follow the SOP.
She said the number of personnel involved in any security control duty would be based on the size of the area to be controlled. In addition, she said, the SOP would also limit the age of members assigned for security control duty to 50 years and below because there were members aged up to 60 and were not suitable based on the fitness factor. Members aged 50 and above, however, were allowed for other duties such as ‘gotong-royong’.
Kamariah also said that the number of Rela members totalling about 3.049 million nationwide would be reduced following the updating of registration of new members beginning this year. She said a check would be carried out with the relevant authorities to ensure that new applicants for membership as well as the old members were citizens, free from drugs and had never been convicted for criminal offences.
