  • Flood mitigation funding pending Sungai Jawi basin study.
  • RM400,000 spent on two flood mitigation works.
  • Five maintenance rounds conducted along Sungai Junjong in 2026.

GEORGE TOWN, November 6 — Penang has yet to finalise funding for proposed flood retention ponds and embankments in Kampung Sepulau and Tasek Chempedak.

State executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari said. Responding to Sungai Bakap assemblyman Abidin Ismail, Zairil said funding decisions would depend on the Sungai Jawi Integrated River Basin Management study.

Which assesses flood risks and drainage conditions. He said major flood mitigation projects require technical studies, land acquisition and substantial funding.

Meanwhile, the state completed two flood mitigation works costing RM400,000 in August and conducted five rounds of Sungai Junjong maintenance in 2026.

Zairil explained that Sungai Junjong forms part of the Sungai Jawi river basin, requiring coordinated flood management to prevent downstream impacts.

The study’s findings will guide future mitigation measures, including project design, estimated costs and land acquisition requirements.
