GEORGE TOWN, Apr 11 – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) today arrested a well-known Penang property developer with the title of “Datuk Seri” and his “Dato” son to assist investigations into a land scandal involving Yayasan Bumiputra Pulau Pinang Berhad. The father and son, aged 74 and 47, were arrested by MACC officers from Putrajaya at the state MACC headquarters on Northam Road at 7pm today on suspicion of involvement in corrupt practices.
The two men are said to have big property developments in Tanjung Bungah and Kepala Batas. MACC will obtain a remand order from the George Town Magistrate’s Court tomorrow morning. They are believed to be under investigation over a land scandal involving hundreds of acres of real estate related to a Bumiputra foundation.
This is the same case in which a prominent 70-year-old Datuk was arrested by the MACC on March 29 for alleged involvement in obtaining gratification worth millions through his position as a director of a foundation in Penang. MACC’s investigations, sources say, were related to land transactions conducted by the foundation. The Datuk was remanded for five days and later released on RM100,000 bail on April 3 after the MACC failed to extend the remand at the Magistrate’s Court. — PN
