GEORGE TOWN, August 30 – On August 31, 2023, we mark the 66th anniversary of our independence. Achieving independence is no easy feat. It doesn’t come easily, and it requires dedication, sacrifice, and a spirit of unity that must continue to be based on genuine unity. This year, the National Day celebration takes on even greater significance as history has been made with the formation of the Unity Government, putting an end to the political uncertainty that has never occurred before in Malaysian history.
The formation of this Unity Government demonstrates the wisdom of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which serves as the cornerstone of unity and the well-being of the people. In line with this year’s theme, “Malaysia Madani: Unity in Fulfilling Aspirations,” symbolizes the unity of Malaysia’s diverse people from various religious backgrounds, historical developments, cultural crossroads, and racial assimilation. Unity unites the entire community, forming an identity with common values and a shared love for our homeland. Let us put aside political disputes after the recent 15th State Election and focus on the administration of unity. Without unity, we cannot achieve continuous stability, prosperity, and progress.
Let us stop any provocation, avoid making divisive statements using religious and racial sentiments, or spreading false information, especially on social media, which can lead to division among our diverse people. As a symbolic mandate for the new Unity Government, the line-up of members of the State Executive Council and the elected State Assembly members are now ready to chart the course for our beloved state. From there, we must be grateful that Penang has been making its unique mark since 2008. Penang continues to attract high-potential investments, with over RM200 billion recorded through investments in the manufacturing sector.
It has remained the country’s top exporter since 2018, with a total value of RM170.8 trillion, while creating over 222,000 job opportunities. Penang has also received various international accolades and has become a favorite destination for tourists from abroad. Through the Vision Penang2030: A Smart and Green State Anchored by an Inspiring Family, various new initiatives and approaches have been introduced to ensure that the state’s development is enjoyed by all. “We Are Penang, We Can!”
In conclusion, it is hoped that the beginning of a new chapter and new challenges for the next five years can be faced to ensure that the Unity Government of Penang remains relevant, including increasing participation and the well-being of the people, and driving development so that Penang continues to be a leader in progress.
