GEORGE TOWN, September 28 – The Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC) organized the “Let’s Clean It Up Malaysia!” program in conjunction with World Clean Up Day 2023 on September 9th and 10th, 2023, with the support of the Green Sustainable Educators Association of Penang (GREW). This program falls under the Environmental category and is part of the Penang Youth Volunteers’ initiative. The event on September 9th, 2023 (Saturday) took place under the Penang Bridge and saw the participation of 40 Penang Youth Volunteers.
Additionally, a session was held at Pantai Robina Teluk Ayer Tawar on September 10th, 2023, with the involvement of 24 Penang Youth Volunteers. YB Gooi Zi Sen, Penang State EXCO for Youth, Sports, and Health, emphasized the need to preserve and protect our environment. He noted that World Clean Up Day shouldn’t be a one-day affair but rather an ongoing practice. During this two-day program, Penang Youth Volunteers successfully collected a total of 131kg of waste. Among the types of waste collected, some alarming figures included 1812 discarded cigarette butts, 2740 pieces of dirty plastic, and 1021 plastic bottles.
Dr. Gwee Sai Ling, the CEO of the Penang Youth Development Corporation, encouraged more youths to join the Penang Youth Volunteers platform, emphasizing the significance of collectively contributing to our community. “This is our first time participating in such a program, and we didn’t expect to find so much waste in this area. We urge the public not to litter indiscriminately and to keep our environment clean,” said Ivy Thor and Teh Hui Yu, Penang Youth Volunteers who participated in the program.
With various initiatives like this, PYDC believes that it can raise awareness among youth about the importance of preserving our environment and foster teamwork among Penang Youth Volunteers.
