BINTULU, October 21 – The Bintulu Additional Gas Facility (BAGSF-2) has initiated the supply of gas to a new methanol plant in Bintulu, Sarawak, marking a significant milestone in the region’s petrochemical industry. This gas supply, facilitated through a newly constructed pipeline, will fuel the commissioning of Sarawak Petchem Sdn Bhd (SPSB)’s world-scale methanol plant. With a design capacity of 390 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMscfd), BAGSF-2 has been tailored to meet the demands of the new methanol plant, requiring 160 MMscfd.

Additionally, it will supply 70 MMscfd to Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB)’s existing power plant in Bintulu. The remaining capacity is earmarked for other projects in Bintulu, aligning with the Sarawak Gas Roadmap. A ceremony held at the Tanjung Kidurong facility marked the commencement of gas delivery. The event was attended by the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg, Sarawak Deputy Premier Prof Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, State Ministers, Deputy Ministers, and representatives from PETRONAS.

Senior Vice President of Malaysia Petroleum Management, Mohamed Firouz Asnan, represented PETRONAS, while Puan Hasliza Othman, Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Carigali, represented the operator of BAGSF-2. Speaking on behalf of PETRONAS, Firouz expressed, “This additional gas supply will drive the further growth of Sarawak’s downstream sector, particularly in the Bintulu region. PETRONAS is honored to contribute to the value addition of hydrocarbon resources found off the coast of Sarawak.”

He further stated, “This project underscores our commitment to support the state’s vision for enhanced downstream development. It is rooted in our ‘Amanah’ (trust) to responsibly develop Malaysia’s hydrocarbon resources for the benefit of its people.” In 2016, PETRONAS entered into an agreement with the Sarawak Government to supply 450 MMscfd of natural gas for power generation and state-owned petrochemical industries. This agreement led to the construction of BAGSF-2, managed by PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd.

Five years later, PETRONAS signed another Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further increase gas supply to 1,200 billion standard cubic feet per day for Sarawak.
