KUALA LUMPUR, October 20 – Several Malaysian eWallet providers are implementing stricter policies on credit card reloads to prevent abuse, and Touch ‘n Go eWallet is no exception. Effective from November 1, 2023, all manual credit card reloads exceeding RM1,000 per month will be categorized as transferable balance, and a 1% administration fee will be automatically applied. This move follows previous attempts by Touch ‘n Go eWallet to regulate the use of credit card reloads. Initially, the eWallet set a “transferable limit” of RM5,000 for such reloads last year, aimed at reducing cash-outs and transfers that were not genuine retail transactions.
Subsequently, in March of this year, this limit was lowered to RM1,000 per month for credit card reloads. Users can still reload more than RM1,000 per month via credit card, but they have the option to categorize these reloads as transferable with a 1% fee. The latest terms and conditions introduced on October 10, 2023, mean that manual credit card reloads exceeding RM1,000 will be automatically classified as transferable balance, and users will no longer have the choice to categorize them as non-transferable. However, this change appears to apply only to manual credit card reloads and may not affect auto-reloads or direct card payments when the eWallet balance is insufficient.
Touch ‘n Go eWallet is one of the few local eWallets that still offer free credit card reloads within a set quota. Notably, BigPay introduced fees of up to 3% for credit card reloads on August 30, 2023, and foreign transactions in MYR now incur an additional 0.5% fee. This policy change aims to enhance clarity and transparency for users and encourage responsible use of the platform. However, some flexibility may remain, as it is hinted that users could have the option to convert non-transferable balance from TNG reload PINs to transferable balance by paying a 1% admin fee, although this is subject to specific circumstances determined by TNG Digital.
