GEORGE TOWN, November 1 – Dabble Dabble Jer Collective, one of Penang’s rising arts collectives, is set to debut its highly anticipated theatre production, Burden of Proof, from November 24 to 26, 2023, at Hall 2 & 4, Jetty 35. The production offers a powerful exploration of sexual violence in Malaysia, drawing from real-life accounts and incorporating dramatic monologues, movement, and original music. The production serves as a creative response to submissions received from victim-survivors during a nationwide open call earlier this year, shedding light on their lived experiences.
Co-directed by Charity Yong and Ysabel Loh, with Bernardine Jeanne Abeysekra as the Music Director & Composer, Burden of Proof invites audiences to delve into the challenges and weight of survival after experiencing sexual violence. Through this compelling work, the Collective aims to foster collective awareness and responsibility in the global fight against sexual and gender-based violence. Tickets for Burden of Proof can be obtained through a donation-based system, with early bird and student rates available. This theatre production is entirely self-funded by Dabble Dabble Jer Collective, with a crowdfunding campaign running alongside ticket sales.
All proceeds will be directed towards production costs, rental expenses, and personnel fees, reaffirming the Collective’s commitment to addressing a topic often considered taboo in society. Burden of Proof offers a poignant and thought-provoking perspective on an important issue. Visit their website for more information.
