KUALA LUMPUR, December 13 – Sunway Healthcare Group has launched its annual “Know Diabetes” campaign in alignment with World Diabetes Day, aiming to support the Government’s and Ministry of Health’s efforts to combat diabetes in Malaysia. Now in its third year, the digital-first campaign leverages interactive elements to enhance health literacy, targeting a wider audience. With 1 in 5 adults in Malaysia already diagnosed with diabetes, and projections indicating a potential rise to 1 in 3 adults by 2025, the campaign introduces a free diabetes risk calculator assessment and knowledge quizzes.
Over the past two years, Sunway Healthcare Group’s efforts have reached over 1.4 million Malaysians through webinars, social media engagement, and diabetes e-guidebook downloads. Dato’ Lau Beng Long, President of Sunway Healthcare Group, emphasized the importance of collective efforts in curbing the diabetes crisis. The campaign is designed to unite Malaysians from diverse backgrounds, encouraging them to adopt healthier lifestyles. The initiative aligns with recent government measures, such as proposed increases in excise duty on sweetened beverages (‘sugar tax’), with funds earmarked for diabetes treatment and dialysis support.
Social media influencer Arwind Kumar will kick-start the campaign with a challenge, inviting Malaysians to spread awareness about diabetes. Participants stand a chance to win tickets to a special diabetes-friendly dinner at a Michelin-star chef’s restaurant in Sunway Resort Hotel. Sunway Home Healthcare’s experts, Dr Ng Xun Jin and Dr Ng Chin Nee, will contribute to the campaign by demonstrating the impact of food choices on blood sugar levels using a continuous glucose monitor. The public is encouraged to suggest specific foods for tracking on the monitor, fostering engagement and education about diabetes and healthy living.
