GEORGE TOWN, November 29 ― Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has emphasized that former chief ministers of Penang bear the responsibility to wholeheartedly support the current government elected by the people through the democratic system. Stressing the importance of respecting decisions, direction, and the style of leadership, Chow highlighted that such support contributes to the overall benefit of the people and the sovereignty of the state.
While acknowledging the value of constructive criticism, he cautioned against attempts to meddle and influence the state government’s decisions, emphasizing the potential hindrance to government efforts and plans. Chow, responding to an oral question in the Penang State Legislative Assembly, noted that former chief ministers can continue serving the people after their tenure ends. Addressing queries about the salaries of the chief minister and executive councillors, Chow mentioned that the chief minister’s salary, around RM14,000, has remained unchanged for the past 20 years.
While executive councillors receive approximately RM12,000, with the last salary review occurring a decade ago. The chief minister clarified the discrepancy, citing differences in responsibilities. Recent media reports highlighted a provision preventing former Penang chief ministers who have served two terms, before or after a constitutional amendment, from being re-appointed to the same position.
