KUALA LUMPUR, January 1 – The Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia is taking proactive steps to drive a sustainable energy future by spearheading initiatives in bioenergy clustering. YBhg. Dato’ Hamzah Hussin, the Chief Executive Officer of SEDA Malaysia, recently unveiled the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) during a panel discussion at the 28th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).

The roadmap outlines plans to leverage new technology and foster collaboration between sectors with significant bioenergy potential, aligning Malaysia’s efforts with global sustainability goals. As part of the National Energy Transition Policy (NETR), SEDA Malaysia is entrusted to lead a Bioenergy clustering initiative, aiming to stimulate demand for biomass, especially within the palm oil industry. This strategic move, coupled with ongoing incentives like the FiT mechanism, is poised to catalyze investments in bioenergy, focusing on expanding capacity through projects in biomass, biogas, and waste-to-energy.

YBhg. Dato’ Hamzah emphasized proposed strategies, including technology exchange, private sector partnerships, and investment in innovative technologies to create environmentally friendly solutions and job opportunities within the industry. Innovation is at the forefront of SEDA Malaysia’s agenda to achieve net-zero GHG aspirations by 2050. The authority is keen on establishing an innovative infrastructure that advances renewable energy within the country, with plans to enhance the FiT mechanism and include new energy sources like geothermal and wind energy. By exploring funding sources such as carbon taxes and reallocating funds from fossil fuel subsidies, SEDA Malaysia aims to develop infrastructure supporting the acceleration of the share of renewable energy in the grids.
