KUALA LUMPUR, January 3 — The Green Building Index (GBI), Malaysia’s premier green building benchmark, proudly announces the certification of 300 million square feet of green buildings across the country. This significant milestone, achieved through GBI’s 18 rating tools designed for Malaysia’s tropical climate, includes 671 GBI-certified projects out of 1,176 registered projects. The announcement was made at the “Celebration of 300 Million Square Feet of GBI-Certified Green Buildings” at PAM Centre, officiated by YB Tuan Nga Kor Ming, Minister of Local Government Development.

Beyond the numerical achievement, GBI’s impact on sustainability is substantial, resulting in an estimated annual reduction of 1,749,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2E). This accomplishment underscores GBI’s commitment to supporting Malaysia’s sustainability policies, aligning with national goals such as the National Energy Transition Roadmap. GBI’s tailored approach to green building practices in Malaysia’s tropical climate plays a pivotal role in contributing to the country’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

In congratulating GBI for this achievement, YB Tuan Nga Kor Ming emphasized the importance of a whole-of-nation approach to greening buildings, aligning with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act 2023. GBI’s meticulous customization of rating tools specifically for Malaysia, coupled with its non-profit structure, distinguishes it as a sustainability benchmark widely recognized in the construction industry.
