KUALA LUMPUR, December 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called upon Government-linked investment companies (GLICs) and government-linked companies (GLCs) to align their efforts with the nation’s vision of becoming a world-class Islamic economic hub and investment destination. In his role as Finance Minister, Anwar emphasized the need for GLICs and GLCs to increase investments in the digital and renewable energy sectors while supporting the expansion of the micro, small, and medium enterprise sector (MSME) into regional markets.

Following a recent meeting with GLIC CEOs, Anwar highlighted the significance of reforming GLICs and GLCs to prioritize the development and well-being of the people, aligning with the Madani Economy framework. The Prime Minister welcomed recommendations from GLIC CEOs, which included optimizing corporate zakat collection, collaborating with the private sector to develop student accommodations, and channeling more funds for investments in unlisted SMEs. Anwar also mandated GLICs to boost their domestic direct investments, underscoring their responsibility in contributing to economic growth and enhancing the people’s income.

With total assets under management reaching RM1.84 trillion, almost equal to Malaysia’s nominal GDP, GLICs are positioned to significantly impact and accelerate the nation’s economy. Regular monitoring meetings led by the Prime Minister or Finance Minister II will ensure the progress and achievements of GLIC-led initiatives.
