KUALA LUMPUR, January 11 – Transport Minister Anthony Loke has revealed that Prasarana Berhad Malaysia, a government-owned public transport company, will exclusively procure electric buses starting March next year. This decision aligns with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s initiative to transform Malaysia into a regional green energy powerhouse and promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Loke emphasized that the directive is part of the government’s broader agenda to reduce dependence on fossil-fuel technology.

The last batch of diesel buses is expected to be delivered in March 2023, after which Prasarana will focus solely on acquiring electric buses. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Prasarana aims to phase out diesel buses entirely by 2037. Between 2025 and 2030, the company plans to introduce over 1,100 electric buses into its fleet. Currently, 15 electric buses are operational as feeder buses for the Sunway BRT system, with an additional 150 electric buses set to be purchased in 2024 for the light transit rail 3 project.

Transport Minister Loke hinted that Prasarana might consider procuring an additional 100 electric buses in the near future. This strategic shift towards electric buses reflects Malaysia’s commitment to environmental conservation and the global transition to cleaner and more sustainable transportation solutions.
