PUTRAJAYA, January 10 – Malaysian telecommunications companies have decided not to impose additional charges for subscribers to access the 5G network, announced Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. After discussions with the CEOs of all telecommunication firms, Fahmi reassured the public that accessing the 5G network will not incur extra fees. He emphasized that subscribers will have various plan options and services to choose from based on their individual needs, reminding them to ensure that their devices support the 5G network.
Fahmi conducted the Cellular Service Quality Test (Voice Calls) and addressed the media, providing an update on the 5G network coverage in Malaysia. He mentioned that the coverage had reached 73% as of November 7, 2023. Previously, Fahmi had indicated that the government would take action against telecommunication companies attempting to charge additional fees for 5G services. In response to concerns about telecommunication-related problems, Fahmi urged all mobile network operators to address these issues promptly, emphasizing that subscribers deserve quality service equivalent to the value of their subscriptions.
The minister will announce the current status of the 5G network coverage and whether Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) will be placed under the Communications Ministry or Digital Ministry in a media conference after the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim tomorrow. The restructuring of the Ministry of Communications and Digital was announced by Anwar during the first reshuffle of the unity government Cabinet on December 12, 2023.
