KUALA LUMPUR, January 18 – Malaysia and Singapore have reached a significant bilateral agreement to implement a passport-free travel system, facilitating smoother movement across their southern border in Johor. In a joint statement, the Ministry of Economy of Malaysia and Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

The agreement aims to strengthen economic ties between the two nations and includes initiatives such as a passport-free QR code clearance system, a one-stop business and investment service center in Johor, digitized cargo clearance processes, and collaborative efforts to address talent skill gaps and promote renewable energy cooperation. Singapore, being the second-largest foreign investor in Johor, contributing 70% to the state’s overall foreign direct investment in the manufacturing sector, underscores the economic significance of this partnership.

The signing ceremony, witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and Minister of Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong, marks a pivotal step toward enhanced cross-border flow of goods and people, fostering economic attractiveness and connectivity for both Johor and Singapore. Rafizi expressed confidence that the JS-SEZ initiative would usher in a transformative chapter in bilateral economic relations, while Gan emphasized the collaborative potential for both countries to tap into complementary strengths and achieve shared growth.
