KUALA LUMPUR, January 13 – In a recent move, former Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has formally requested the Malaysian government to remove the documentary “Man on The Run” from the Netflix streaming platform. The documentary delves into the intricate details of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, implicating Najib in alleged financial misconduct.

Expressing concern that the documentary could potentially prejudice his ongoing trials related to the 1MDB scandal, Najib’s legal team submitted a letter to the Communications Ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). They urged authorities to take immediate action to have the documentary removed from Netflix and also proposed that the MCMC consider legal measures against the creators, citing laws pertaining to offensive online content. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim responded to Najib’s request, assuring that the government would evaluate the situation.

Anwar acknowledged the nature of the documentary and stated that the authorities would carefully consider Najib’s concerns. This development highlights the intricate interplay between legal proceedings, media representation, and the regulatory challenges associated with online content distribution. The outcome of this evaluation will likely carry implications for both media freedom and the government’s stance on content regulation in Malaysia, as the country grapples with the evolving dynamics of digital media and legal proceedings.
