KUALA LUMPUR, January 18 – Maxis has clarified that its 5G access pass has always been offered for free to existing customers, contrary to earlier reports that suggested otherwise. The green telco introduced a 5G access pass priced at RM10, allowing existing 4G customers to access the 5G network. During the introductory period, the 5G pass was offered for free for the first 30 days.
Maxis has now reiterated that they have consistently waived the promotional 5G access fee, making it free for all existing customers. The clarification comes following the recent announcement by Communications and Multimedia Minister Fahmi Fadzil that telcos would not impose extra charges for 5G access. To activate the 5G access pass on your Maxis or Hotlink postpaid line, follow these steps:
- Launch the Maxis or Hotlink app (available on Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Huawei AppGallery) and log in to your postpaid account.
- Tap on the “Get 5G” icon on the home screen.
- Scroll down to “Enjoy free 5G access pass with your existing postpaid plan” and click on “Try Now.”
- Follow the instructions provided to activate the pass.
For Hotlink prepaid users, here’s how to activate the 5G access pass:
- Launch the Hotlink app (available on Apple App Store, Google Play Store, Huawei AppGallery) and log in to your prepaid account.
- Click on “Others” and then click on “5G Access.”
- Click on “Buy Now.”
- You will receive a confirmation message once the pass is activated.
Please note that in addition to having a plan with 5G access, you must also own a 5G-enabled device and reside within a 5G coverage area. As of December 31, 2023, Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), the national 5G infrastructure provider, achieved 80.2% 5G population coverage.
