BATU KAWAN, January 22 — In response to escalating traffic congestion, the Penang government has called on PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) to promptly execute the Juru-Sungai Dua elevated highway project. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow conveyed that the state government emphasized this need during a meeting with the Public Private Partnership Unit (UKAS) of the Prime Minister’s Department held yesterday in Batu Kawan.
The proposed project aims to address the intensifying traffic issues caused by contra routes on the North-South Highway (Juru-Sungai Dua and vice versa) and between the Penang Bridge and Perai, resulting in slow-moving vehicles and severe congestion. Chow Kon Yeow stressed that the elevated highway’s construction would significantly alleviate traffic flow challenges by separating users on the highway and local users. The Chief Minister expressed hope that PLUS would expedite the implementation of this crucial project.
The congestion not only impacts the daily lives of residents in Perai and Seberang Jaya but also has broader repercussions on transportation networks, affecting the Penang Bridge, Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, and the route connecting Bayan Lepas and George Town city centre. Chow Kon Yeow underlined the urgency of the project, citing its essential role in enhancing both the living environment and the operational efficiency of industries and investments in the region.
