GEORGE TOWN, January 24 – Approximately 200,000 consumers in Penang’s south-west district and various areas in Seberang Prai are grappling with unscheduled water disruptions due to an unexpected underwater pipeline leakage in Sungai Perai, Butterworth. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow reported that divers from the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) are assessing the extent of the damage, and immediate repair work will follow once the leakage is identified.
This incident marks the third underwater pipeline leakage in Sungai Perai, following disruptions in December and January 12. PBAPP is working on temporary solutions, including the installation of a temporary pipeline expected to be completed by February 2, pending a long-term replacement project for the underwater pipeline. Two options are being considered to restore water to at least half of the homes on Penang island, following a major pipe rupture.
Chow Kon Yeow, the chief minister, mentioned a “quick fix” that would restore water supply within 24 to 48 hours or expediting the completion of the pipe diversion project. The burst riverbed pipe at Sungai Perai has experienced several ruptures since December, affecting various areas and prompting urgent measures to address the water supply emergency.
