GEORGE TOWN, January 27 – In the ongoing Sungai Perai emergency response, the status report at 11:30 am on Saturday, January 27, 2024, indicates substantial progress and strategic planning for both Plan A and Plan B. In Plan A, the re-clamping work on the 1,350mm underwater pipeline has been completed, achieving a significant milestone. The recovery of water supply for 84% of the 120,000 affected consumers is in progress and scheduled for completion by 6:30 pm on Saturday.
The subsequent recovery for the remaining 16%, including those at the end-of-line and high ground, is set for 6:30 pm on Sunday, January 28, 2024. Plan B, focused on the pipeline diversion by connecting two new 600mm pipelines to replace the underwater pipeline, is notably 24 hours ahead of the original schedule. Key tasks, such as site preparation works and the scheduled water supply interruption (SWSI) to enable diversion works, are in progress. The pipeline diversion work is set for completion by 11:30 pm on Sunday, January 28, 2024.
Despite the progress, there will be a “24-hour pause” before the SWSI on January 29, 2024, allowing affected consumers time to store water for use during the interruption. Consumers in the affected area are urged to take necessary precautions and store water accordingly. The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) emphasizes careful water pumping to prevent mishaps and assures consumers of ongoing efforts for a comprehensive and timely resolution.
