GEORGE TOWN, February 5 – The Penang Hill cable car project is slated to kick off in April 2024, as announced by Datuk Cheok Lay Leng, the General Manager of Penang Hill Corporation (PHC). Following the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for April, the project is expected to span approximately 18 months, subject to weather conditions and the project’s complexity in hilly terrains. All necessary approvals, including the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and planning permission, have been secured, ensuring a smooth commencement of the ambitious project.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow affirmed that the National Physical Planning Council has granted its approval for the cable car project. Awarded to local rail industry pioneer Hartasuma Sdn Bhd through a public-private partnership (PPP), the project entails design, finance, build, operate, and transfer. With an estimated investment of RM245 million and a 30-year concession period, Hartasuma is poised to contribute significantly to the realization of this innovative transportation initiative. In a separate development, the reopening ceremony of the newly upgraded Penang Hill Station marked another milestone.
Following a comprehensive RM10.9 million project spanning over three years, the station now boasts an increased capacity of 700 visitors, a substantial rise from its previous limit of 250 people. Renamed Penang Hill Station from Penang Hill Upper Station, the facility combines century-old charm with modern upgrades, featuring green and sustainable practices such as renewable energy, rainwater harvesting, and automatic lighting. The completion of the station’s upgrades sets the stage for the forthcoming enhancement of Astaka Bukit Bendera.
