KUALA LUMPUR, February 4 – Khairy Jamaluddin, former Umno Youth chief, has called for transparency from the Pardons Board regarding the decision to halve former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s prison sentence in connection to the 1MDB scandal. Khairy emphasized the importance of providing Malaysians with an explanation to prevent speculation and rumors surrounding the decision.

He suggested that if the decision was based on Najib’s service to the nation, the Pardons Board should clarify this aspect to avoid confusion and ensure transparency. The announcement by the Federal Territories Pardons Board revealed a reduction in Najib’s prison sentence and fine, allowing for his potential release by 2028, with parole eligibility after serving two-thirds of the six-year term. The decision was made during the January 29 meeting of the Pardons Board, chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, as mandated by the Federal Constitution.
