GEORGE TOWN, February 5 – The Kek Lok Si Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia, has adorned itself with a spectacular display of lights and lanterns in preparation for the upcoming Chinese New Year festivities. The temple, situated in Ayer Itam, will be illuminated nightly from Feb 9, the eve of the festival, until March 7. Thousands of vibrant lights have been strategically placed across the temple’s intricate structure, creating a dazzling visual spectacle.

This year’s decorations feature dragon-shaped lanterns, symbolizing the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese zodiac. The official lighting-up ceremony, led by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, took place on Sunday (Feb 4) at 7.30 pm. The event drew the participation of various state leaders and the temple’s former committee chairman, Datuk Seri Seck Jit Heng. Following a series of prayers, the ceremony concluded with a 10-minute fireworks display, leaving attendees somewhat disappointed in its brevity and impact.
