KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 – Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced today that Malaysia has surpassed 10 million users on the 5G network as of last month. This milestone reflects a significant increase of 17.4 percentage points from November last year, according to data from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Fahmi emphasized the rapid adoption rate, noting a remarkable surge from 12.5 percent in November 2023 to nearly 30 percent in January. Fahmi attributed this surge to the efforts of local telecommunications companies (telcos), who played a crucial role by waiving the 5G service charge, expediting the network’s rollout.

Last month, Fahmi revealed that telcos unanimously agreed not to impose additional charges for subscribers accessing the 5G network. With the 5G network coverage already reaching 76.1 percent in populated areas by November 2023, Fahmi anticipates achieving the target of 80 percent coverage by the year-end. Once this milestone is attained, the government will consider establishing a second 5G network, Fahmi added. In Selangor alone, 5G network coverage has already reached an impressive 95.9 percent as of December.
