KUALA LUMPUR, February 26 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has directed the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and the National Action Council on Cost of Living (Naccol) to resolve the issues surrounding rice supply and prices in Malaysia by March 20. Addressing concerns during a dialogue session at the conclusion of the Central Zone Madani Rakyat programme, Anwar emphasized the importance of careful consideration in addressing the matter, recognizing the conflicting interests involved.

Anwar highlighted the need to strike a balance between reducing rice prices for consumers and ensuring fair compensation for rice farmers, who are among the vulnerable groups in the country. Acknowledging the complexity of the issue, Anwar urged Padiberas Nasional Bhd (Bernas) to explore strategies to reduce rice imports and boost local production. The directive comes amid ongoing discussions within Naccol, with Anwar emphasizing the need for weekly meetings until March 20 to find a viable solution to the rice price issue.
