GEORGE TOWN, March 30 – The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) is sounding the alarm on the use of inaccurate mechanical weighing scales in wet markets, urging immediate action from the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cost of Living. Following a recent survey, CAP discovered that some traders are employing weighing scales with concealed calibration stickers, a violation of regulations stipulating their visibility to consumers.
CAP emphasizes the necessity of annual calibration, proposing that the calibration year be prominently printed on stickers for consumer awareness. Furthermore, CAP advocates for transparent display of calibration stickers facing consumers and insists on the installation of two public weighing scales in every market, one specifically for halal items, to ensure fairness and consumer protection.
