SHAH ALAM, March 27 — Datuk Seri Chai Kee Kan, the founder and group executive chairman of KK Group, which owns the KK Mart convenience store chain, along with his wife, Datin Seri Loh Siew Mui, a director of the company, were charged at the Shah Alam Sessions Court yesterday. They faced charges under Section 298 of the Penal Code for allegedly intending to wound religious feelings over the sale of socks bearing the word ‘Allah’ at a KK Mart outlet in Selangor. The couple pleaded not guilty and posted bail of RM10,000 each, with the case scheduled for mention on April 29.

Meanwhile, Soh Chin Huat, the director of Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd, along with his daughter and managing director Soh Hui San, and wife Goh Li Huay, were charged for abetting the offence by supplying the socks. Both entities, KK Supermart and Superstore Sdn Bhd and Xin Jian Chang, were also charged separately. These legal actions come amidst KK Mart’s lawsuit against Xin Jian Chang and Chin Huat, seeking damages for allegedly interfering with its business by supplying the controversial socks. KK Mart is claiming RM10.5 million for brand damage and RM20.3 million due to an aborted proposed listing on the stock exchange, along with additional damages to be assessed by the court.
