SEPANG, March 28 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced today that the relevant ministries will convene in the coming week to discuss the implementation of Malaysia’s second 5G network. This meeting will involve the Communications Ministry, Digital Ministry, and Finance Ministry. “We expect to have the meeting within this next one week,” Fahmi stated after the opening of BlackBerry’s Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence. Currently, Malaysia operates on a single wholesale network model managed by Digital Nasional Bhd.

Earlier this month, Fahmi mentioned that the rollout of the second 5G network would be delayed despite Digital Nasional Bhd reaching the 80 per cent coverage threshold, awaiting the formation of a new board. Last year, five major mobile network operators signed a share subscription agreement for each to hold a 14 per cent stake in DNB, following negotiations that nearly jeopardized the RM16 billion enterprise. The decision to establish a second purely commercial entity for developing the second 5G network was seen as a compromise after MNOs had threatened to boycott signing up for DNB shares.
