PUTRAJAYA, March 29 – Transport Minister Loke Siew Fook revealed today that the Cabinet has given its approval for the Penang LRT project, marking a significant milestone in the state’s transportation infrastructure advancement. The federal government has tasked MRT Corp with overseeing the project’s development and ownership of assets, with an anticipated completion date set for 2030. Divided into three sections, the initial phase will cover the route from Silicon Island to Komtar in George Town.

Loke clarified that SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd will manage this portion of the project through a single sourcing request for proposal method, as per the Penang government’s request. SRS Consortium was previously selected as the project delivery partner for the Penang Transport Master Plan, including the LRT line, following an open tender process in August 2015. As a subsidiary of Gamuda Bhd, SRS Consortium’s involvement underscores the collaboration between public and private entities in realizing Penang’s transportation aspirations.
