GEORGE TOWN, March 30 – The Penang government anticipates that construction for the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) Mutiara Line project will kick off in September or October of this year, announced Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. The commencement of work awaits the finalization of project details between SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd and Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), following the federal government’s takeover of the project from the state government.
Chow expressed gratitude for the Transport Minister’s announcement and emphasized that while the project transitioned to federal oversight, technical preparations are still necessary before construction can begin. The depot location at the Pesta site in Sungai Nibong has been identified, with the state government proposing an additional depot on Silicon Island. Looking ahead, Chow hopes for the extension of the Tanjung Bungah to Komtar line after the completion of the initial 29-kilometre Mutiara Line, which will connect Silicon Island to Komtar and Penang Sentral in Seberang Perai, boasting 20 stations, including two interchange stations.
