KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 – Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has expressed grave concern over the alarming increase in open burning cases during the first two months of 2024, attributing it largely to the scorching heat and arid conditions. Nga disclosed that February alone witnessed a staggering total of 5,556 reported incidents, marking a drastic surge of over six times (645%) compared to the 746 cases documented in January.

Highlighting the worst-hit regions, Nga pointed out states such as Kedah, Selangor, Johor, and Sabah, which experienced notable spikes in open burning incidents. Addressing the media during the launch of Op Siaga Raya Aidilfitri 2024 at a shopping center, Nga underscored the dire consequences of the ongoing dry spell, emphasizing the heightened risk of forest, field, bush, and garbage fires across Malaysia. He urged the public to refrain from engaging in open burning practices for waste disposal or agricultural activities during this period, cautioning against the potential devastation it could wreak.

Meanwhile, Nga disclosed that Malaysia suffered a staggering RM2.62 billion in fire losses last year, encompassing various large-scale and domestic fire incidents. In response, the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has intensified efforts to identify and mitigate fire risks, with 652 hotspots already identified. Additionally, Nga handed over the first five units of compact fire rescue tender CFRT to JBPM to bolster their readiness, as Op Siaga aims to formulate proactive strategies to tackle emergency incidents during the festive season.
