GEORGE TOWN, April 2 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) Mutiara Line project, set to commence this September, has garnered more than 90 per cent support from the public during engagement sessions. Chow stated that various stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs), participated in engagement sessions to provide feedback on the RM10.5 billion project.

Chow addressed criticisms from Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) regarding potential environmental impacts and high costs associated with the project. He emphasized that all views submitted during the engagement sessions were considered, with the overwhelming majority expressing support for the project. Chow highlighted the importance of addressing traffic congestion, which incurs significant costs to both the people and the social economy of the state.

While acknowledging that the LRT may not entirely resolve traffic jams, Chow emphasized that it marks a crucial step towards alleviating congestion. He underscored the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle traffic issues, as outlined in the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP). Chow reassured that SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd, tasked with building the first segment of the project, possesses the expertise to ensure efficient construction and implementation. With Putrajaya officially taking over the LRT project, Chow expressed optimism that the project, once completed, will bring significant benefits to the public.
