SEPANG, April 3 — Transport Minister Anthony Loke clarified that the proposed high-speed rail network, known as the Trans Borneo Railway project, connecting Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Kalimantan, Indonesia, is still in the conceptual stage and has not been offered to any companies. He stated that the tender for conducting feasibility studies for the project is expected to open in May. Loke emphasized that the Trans Borneo Railway project is currently only a proposal, and the Ministry of Transport (MOT) has yet to finalize the tender documents for the feasibility study.
He highlighted the importance of conducting a thorough feasibility study, which is estimated to take nine months, to assess the project’s viability in commercial, technical, and other aspects. The minister cautioned against premature announcements by private companies regarding major projects, stating that any mega projects are only considered valid if announced by the government. He urged all parties to verify such statements to avoid confusion among the public, particularly regarding the Trans Borneo Railway project. As of now, there has been no approval or negotiation with any company, including Brunergy Utama Sdn Bhd, which claimed to implement the project worth US$70 billion (RM330 billion) in two phases.
