Following Nikon’s recent acquisition of RED, the company is embarking on new ventures in the cinema industry. Keiji Oishi, from Nikon’s Imaging Business Unit and RED’s new CEO, revealed that Nikon is considering developing its own line of cinema lenses, recognizing the demand in the market. While Nikon acknowledges the value of its existing lenses for cinema use, it aims to expand its offerings to better serve filmmakers. Additionally, Oishi hinted at the possibility of a professional digital camera jointly developed by Nikon and RED in the future, although such a project would take several years to materialize.
In the meantime, Nikon assures current RED customers of continued support by retaining Canon RF lens mounts on its existing RED cameras. Oishi emphasized Nikon’s commitment to maintaining a seamless customer experience, including warranty, customer service, and product structure, ensuring that current users can rely on their equipment without disruption. While specifics about the arrangement with Canon remain undisclosed, there is optimism regarding the continuity of RF support for filmmakers.
