GEORGE TOWN, April 18 – Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang Sdn Bhd (PBAPP) in Penang stands ready to utilize the Expanded Mengkuang Dam (EMD) as a strategic drought reserve if Sungai Muda’s water levels continue to decline. With Sungai Muda’s levels dropping below the safe threshold, PBAPP conducted a successful trial run of drawing down water from the EMD on 17th April 2024.
Despite managing to abstract sufficient water from Sungai Muda on that day, PBAPP remains on high alert due to the critical importance of Sungai Muda as Penang’s primary raw water resource. While there’s no immediate threat to water supply in Penang, PBAPP continues to monitor Sungai Muda’s levels closely. The increased release of water from the Beris Dam by Syarikat Air Darul Aman (SADA) in Kedah aims to bolster Sungai Muda’s levels.
PBAPP’s ability to draw down 600 MLD from the EMD ensures a backup plan for uninterrupted water supply, underscoring PBAPP’s commitment to ensuring water security for Penang residents.
