KEPALA BATAS, June 9 — The Penang State Education Department (JPN) garnered positive feedback from an engagement session addressing the implementation of the Dual Language Programme (DLP) in the state’s schools. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek highlighted that the session aimed to understand the needs of all stakeholders and reinforce the policy of enhancing both Malay and English language proficiency.

“The guidelines must be adhered to, which is why these engagement sessions are crucial. The recent session conducted by JPN Penang was well-received, underscoring the importance of ongoing dialogue with the community,” Fadhlina stated after opening the Penang Mutiara Media Club Family Day in Bertam. She also commented on the concerns raised by the School Board and Parent-Teacher Association of 11 schools in Penang, who are advocating for a return to the original intention of DLP in teaching Science and Mathematics in English.

In another development, Fadhlina addressed an incident involving a student allegedly punished to stand under the hot sun for nearly three hours. The Education Ministry has initiated an investigation following standard procedures, with the case now in the hands of the police. The student’s mother reported that her son suffered from heat stroke and neurological issues, prompting legal advocacy group Gerakan Guaman Rakyat to call for immediate action against the school and teachers involved.
