CUPERTINO, July 9 – Apple is set to revolutionize its hardware with the upcoming M5 chip, designed for dual-use in future Macs and AI servers. Collaborating with TSMC, Apple is leveraging advanced SoIC (System on Integrated Chip) technology, incorporating thermoplastic carbon fiber composite molding. The M5 chip is currently in small-scale trial production, with mass production slated for 2025 and 2026. This strategic move aims to enhance performance and efficiency in both consumer devices and AI cloud infrastructure.
The M5’s hybrid design marks a significant step towards Apple’s vertical integration of its supply chain for AI functionality. With references to the M5 already appearing in Apple code, the new chip is expected to support Apple’s AI servers, which currently run on M2 Ultra chips. The M5 is anticipated to debut in Macs towards the end of 2025, following the launch of the M4 in various devices by late 2024. This development underscores Apple’s commitment to optimizing energy consumption and advancing its sustainability goals while pushing the boundaries of computing technology.
