TOKYO, August 1 — Canon’s Q2 2024 financial report reveals robust global camera sales, contrasting sharply with the company’s poor performance in its domestic market. While international sales have seen an 11.6% increase and operating profits are up 19%, Canon’s Japanese subsidiary reports a concerning 14% drop in interchangeable lens camera sales for the quarter, following a 31% decline in the previous period. The company’s domestic struggles highlight a stark contrast with its better-performing segments outside Japan, including the “Asia and Oceania” market.

Canon’s global strategy includes a significant stock buyback of 20 million shares worth approximately $532.8 million, and plans to streamline its workforce, particularly outside Japan. Despite these efforts, Canon is focusing heavily on new products like the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II to drive future growth, especially in international markets. The company’s imaging division remains crucial, contributing 25% of its profit margin, though the printing division continues to be the most profitable.
