KUALA LUMPUR, September 9 – Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil, has announced the cancellation of the planned DNS diversion by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) after widespread public concern. The DNS diversion, which would have rerouted public DNS services like Google and Cloudflare to local telecommunications companies’ DNS servers, was initially intended to restrict access to harmful content such as pornography and gambling.

However, the move raised questions about privacy and security, prompting the ministry to reconsider. Fahmi stated that while online crimes such as access to illicit websites remain a serious issue, the government will not compromise on online safety. In light of public feedback gathered through engagement sessions with MCMC, the DNS diversion plan has been scrapped.

Fahmi further assured that MCMC will continue discussions with stakeholders to explore alternative measures for creating a safer internet environment, ensuring that public safety and privacy are upheld while addressing harmful online content.
