IPOH, May 7 — Perak continues to struggle in attracting major international hotel brands as many tourists treat the state as a day-trip destination rather than an overnight stop, according to state officials.

Perak Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee chairman Loh Sze Yee said visitors often travel through the state.

Enjoying attractions in areas such as Ipoh, Taiping, Manjung and Teluk Intan before continuing their journeys to nearby hubs like Penang or Kuala Lumpur.

He explained that hotel investors typically require strong overnight stay figures before committing to major developments, making it difficult to secure global brands.

To address this, the state is working with local authorities and tourism agencies to encourage longer stays by expanding accommodation options.

Particularly boutique and themed hotels that match evolving travel trends. Loh added that developments such as Marriott International’s AC Hotel by Marriott Ipoh.

And upcoming projects like Wyndham Hotel Ipoh signal gradual progress in strengthening Perak’s hospitality sector.
