KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 — National utility provider  Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) to transform Malaysia’s electricity grid.

Describing the technology as a “smart GPS” capable of predicting demand, optimising power flow and responding faster to disruptions.

According to TNB Chief Digital and Information Officer Azlan Ahmad, AI now gives the grid “a brain and eyes.”

Enabling real-time monitoring as the system becomes more complex with the rapid growth of solar panels and electric vehicle chargers.

AI is also helping TNB shift from reactive maintenance to predictive operations by detecting faults before outages occur and identifying stress within the power network early.

The utility is already deploying AI tools for predictive cable maintenance, fault detection and field safety improvements.

TNB said the technology will play a major role in supporting future regional initiatives, including the ASEAN Power Grid.

While discussions on AI-driven energy solutions will feature prominently at the upcoming Energy Transition Conference 2026 in Kuala Lumpur.
