GEORGE TOWN, June 6 — Island Hospital marked World Transplant Day by calling for greater public awareness on organ donation.

Particularly as Malaysia faces rising kidney disease cases and a growing number of dialysis patients. The hospital said it is the only private hospital in northern Malaysia with organ transplant capability.

And one of only four private hospitals nationwide offering such services. Hospital representatives said private healthcare providers can complement government hospitals.

By improving access to world-class transplant care within local communities. The session, held in collaboration with Penang Hospital.

Featured specialists who shared insights on organ donation, brain death, living donors and transplant challenges.

Doctors also highlighted a recent kidney transplant involving Jay and his close friend Isaac, who donated a kidney despite not being related.

The case was described as a rare and inspiring example of living, unrelated organ donation in Malaysia. Penang Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi urged more people to register as organ donors through MySejahtera.

And to inform their families of their decision, stressing that family awareness is crucial to ensuring pledged donations are honoured.

Doctors said kidney transplantation can restore quality of life, reduce long-term dialysis costs and give patients a chance to return to work, family life and society.
