KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — Nallini Pathmanathan has been appointed chair of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC), following a unanimous decision by its board members.

The council said Nallini’s appointment marks an important step in strengthening MMC’s role as an independent and credible self-regulatory body under the Malaysian Media Council Act 2025.

A former Federal Court judge with 18 years of judicial experience, Nallini authored about 325 reported judgments and was the first woman of South Asian descent appointed to Malaysia’s superior judiciary.

MMC said her leadership will help address key challenges facing the media industry, including misinformation, artificial intelligence, declining public trust, journalistic ethics and media freedom.
