GEORGE TOWN, August 21 — The Penang Hill cable car project has reached 32% completion, with operations targeted to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Friday.
Physical works are expected to be completed by August 2027. Chow said all underground works had been completed despite challenges posed by Penang Hill’s terrain and restrictions on heavy machinery.

Construction has now moved above ground, where progress is expected to accelerate. The project’s third tower has also been installed.
The cable car will connect the Botanic Gardens area with Penang Hill, providing an alternative route to the existing funicular service.
