KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 – A total of 12,402 convicts were paroled since the parole system was introduced in July 2008, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the number of convicts on parole as of Feb 22 was 664.

“Based on the rehabilitation efforts and monitoring since 2008, only 2.5 per cent of the 12,402 convicts paroled returned to their old ways and ended up in prison again. 97 per cent of those paroled received job offers,” he said when replying to a question from Datuk Noor Ehsanuddin Mohd Harun Narrashid (BN-Kota Tinggi).

Nur Jazlan said the parole system was a huge success with 85 per cent of those paroled returning to live with their families. He added that as for those who did not have a place to live or were not re-accepted by their families, numbering 613 convicts, the Prisons Department has a half-way house arrangement for them. Parole is the provisional release of a prisoner who agrees to certain conditions prior to the completion of the maximum sentence period (source Wikipedia).
