KUALA LUMPUR, October 23 — Mental wellbeing must receive greater attention as Malaysia’s ageing population grows, with older adults expected to account for 12.3% of the population in 2026.

Taylor’s University psychology professor Dr Rozainee Khairudin said emotional distress, depression and social withdrawal should not be dismissed as normal signs of ageing.

She highlighted the importance of meaningful relationships, community activities and emotional support in helping older adults maintain confidence and purpose.

Ahead of World Mental Health Day on Oct 10, she urged families and communities to listen to older adults and prioritise dignity, connection and psychological wellbeing.
