GEORGE TOWN, October 21 — Penang has defended its approach to managing 61 pig farms in Kampung Selamat following calls to shut them over pollution concerns involving Sungai Kereh.
State Local Government Committee chairman H’ng Mooi Lye said pollution sources must be identified through comprehensive investigations rather than blaming a single industry.
The state is implementing waste transfers to existing biogas facilities while considering a dedicated plant in Kampung Selamat. Cleaning works at Sungai Kereh and Parit Cina are expected to begin in early 2027.
H’ng stressed that environmental protection requires stricter enforcement and modern waste management systems.
